Background
The Transformation Project, to literally “transform” St Mary’s, kicked off in 2016, under the auspices of Bishop Stephen and Chris Hill and with an unambiguous intention to bring the PCC and the congregation along with us on this exciting journey . A “Transformation Group” was created as a vehicle to deliver this vision. So what did we want to achieve and why? The Statement of Needs describes our vision for St Mary’s and can be summarised as follows:
- Create a flexible nave area, free of fixed seating, to maximise the opportunities for worship, music, children’s activities, community use and special events (such as concerts, talks, presentations);
-Increase number and quality of rooms for Sunday School, Youth Groups, Creche, Adult Groups, CAP etc.
-Improved Church office, welcome area and washroom facilities;
-Improved heating, sound and lighting;
-Improved facilities for the less bodily abled (wheelchair access for example) and improve safety (remove trailing leads and wires);
-Improve the overall “experience” of worshippers in Church services and for those attending special events such as weddings and christenings.

History of St Mary's
A fundamental consideration of the Project is to respect and celebrate St Mary’s history, when considering changes to what is a beautiful building. Consequently, one of the first jobs of the team was to commission Oliver Bone produce a document entitled Statement of Significance. This is a fascinating document that describes in detail the history and construction of our Church and is always at the fore-front of our minds when we plan changes.
