Climate Stewards - Nepal Smokeless Metal Stoves

Climate Stewards is part of the A Rocha family of organisations helping to care for God’s creation. They are passionate about helping people to live better on low carbon while supporting our global neighbours to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

This year, St. Mary's is supporting the Climate Stewards project to introduce smokeless metal stoves to the deprived and
remote mountainous communities in north-western Nepal.

The smokeless stoves use less wood as fuel, so saving money and resources for the families (on average 59% less wood for fuel).
Each stove will also save 6.5 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
Smokeless metal stoves bring significant other benefits to the families using them. Some families were previously cooking on open fires which fill the room with dense black smoke that comes from burning resin-rich pine (see image on the left). The new stoves burn more cleanly and have chimneys which remove smoke, thus reducing the risks of eye and lung infections. In addition, the stoves are enclosed so the risk of burns to children and adults is reduced.
