Helping & serving at St Mary's
One of the joys of being a Christian is the community into which we are called. The bible calls it the Body of Christ and reminds us that through faith in Jesus we are all born again into one family, encouraging each other, supporting each other, praying for each other, and meeting with each other.
Together our role is to present the good news of Jesus to the people of Ely, making sure every household has the opportunity to respond to Jesus. We do that as a family. We are in it together.

Discovering Your Gifts
The bible makes it clear that all Christians are given "gifts" by the Holy Spirit which they can use to serve God and minister to others. See 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12:1-8 for some of the clearest statements on the subject.
This booklet is intended to help you discover what your gifts might be. It is not foolproof, but it can be a helpful guide. Pray over the results and chat them through with another Christian who knows you well - perhaps your home group leader.
Then think about how you are going to use your gifts. There are many different gifts within the church family, which can be explored below.

Gifts and Church Teams
God gives every one of us gifts to use in the church. The best way to get involved at church is to join one of our Teams. We create our teams to help us fulfil our vision – God designed us to work in teams – sends us out in teams and impacts community through teams.
Music Teams – we encourage our music groups to write or discover new music and to lead us in worship. If you play an instrument – don’t be shy – join on of our groups and bring your creativity into our services.
Sunday School Teams – we have a series of Sunday School Classes that meet during the Sunday 10:30 service and during special
events like Holiday Club. We aim to offer our children ‘Friends, Fun and Faith’. If your passion is to share the good news of Jesus
with children – then this might be the place for you to serve.
Youth Teams – our Pathfinder and ReGen teams aim to encourage our young people to develop as Christians and as leaders –
we hope that our young people will be equipped for key roles when they leave us for the world of Work or University.
Crèche Team – we try to make it easy for new Mums and Dads to come to church – and to develop a habit that will stand their family in good stead – if you would like to help out in our Crèche team – please let us know.
Welcoming and Newcomers teams – our desire is that everyone who takes the courageous step over our threshold for the first time is able to connect with a few people in our church. That way they will have more confidence to pop back a second time. If you are keen to make sure everyone is included – are happy to invite people to your house for coffee or a simple meal – then this team is for you.
Home Groups – These are designed to create small communities in which we can discover the depths and riches of God’s love for us, can pray for each other and can enjoy each other’s company. If you enjoy opening your home or are skilled in leading small groups discussions – this might be for you! Or maybe you simply want to join as a member – that’s perfect too!
Pastoral Team – we want to offer a listening ear to those that need it – a visit for those who couldn’t get out this week – and home communion for those who are permanently housebound. If you are a natural carer and listener – this might be for you!
DIY Team – there is always maintenance to be done on a building like St Mary’s – so if you are handy with tools and user-manuals – then please let us know!
Prayer Team – prayer is vital to the life of the church – praying together in groups – in prayer meetings – praying with individuals – praying during home moves, life events etc. – praying for our mission partners – if prayer is your thing then we’d love you to take a regular role in these teams – let us know!
Mission – we want to support our mission partners with generosity and prayer – the baby hospital in Uganda – mission to prisoners – and others – this may be your passion – tell us!
Street Pastors – our dream is to commission a few street pastors to get alongside the disenfranchised people who call at the Vicarage door and the church from time to time – this is a pretty special gift – will you be our first Street Pastor?
Alpha Team – we run annual Alpha Courses to help those who want to investigate the Christian faith in a hospitable and interesting environment – if you are a cook, an organiser, an Alpha enthusiast – this could be your place to serve.
Catering – St Mary’s serve an endless number of mugs of coffee and tea, after services, during events – from cakes to meals – from squash to the finest coffee – throughout the week. This might be your bag – please tell us – this team is so important to us.
Older Folk – we have a number of senior groups throughout the week – if you love spending time with older folk – it might be chatting – serving – driving – reassuring – come on in and let us know!
Mums and Toddlers – a couple of groups meet at St Mary’s. This is often the front door to church for many young families – if you are into fun, vibrant and activity packed mornings – and good at networking with young families – let us know!
Life Skills – we will be embarking on Life Skills courses – Marriage / Parenting - to add to the CAP Financial Planning Courses we started running in 2014. If you have experience to bring to these – we’d love to hear from you.
Creative and Design – our teams work throughout the year to create videos, drama, poetry, flyers and banners that help us communicate in worship and in our marketing – if you want to let your creative juices run riot in the God’s service at St Mary’s – come and tell us!
PA and AV – this team helps us to deliver our services and creativity in a professional way – managing our projection and sound – so if you like twiddling knobs and balancing sound – tell us!
Social Media – we aim to communicate well throughout the week on Social Media – this might be your area of expertise – tweet us to let us know!
Office – our office volunteers work behind the scenes on our rota, organisation of weddings, funerals and baptisms – our printed communication – booking out our facilities – ensuring the place is kept clean – and that our diaries don’t clash – this might be your area of expertise – then do let us know.
Mentoring - We're in the process of setting up a mentoring programme for our young people. If you've got time to spare and a heart for teenagers, this could be the perfect thing for you to be involved in!
Some of the above are subject to the appropriate safeguards, DBS checks etc. Please be ready for that process.
If you don’t know where your skills lie – then we can help you work to discover the gifts God has given you. Please ask one of the leaders or take a form from the Church called ‘Discovering Your Gifts’ and discuss it with us afterwards.
